Bedford Council of Faiths

Bedford Council of Faiths

Bedford Council of Faiths is a charitable organization dedicated to promoting interfaith understanding, respect, and cooperation in the Borough of Bedford and beyond. Rooted in the “Bedford in Harmony” initiative of the early 1980s and awarded charitable status in 2004, it brings together representatives from diverse faith communities to dispel prejudice, foster friendships, and emphasize the common values shared by different religious traditions. The Council educates the wider community on religious sensitivities, advises local authorities and organizations on faith matters, and advocates for joint social action, making it a vital voice on interfaith issues.

Led by trustees who volunteer from various local faith groups, Bedford Council of Faiths works in collaboration with partners such as Luton Council of Faiths and holds affiliations with national bodies like the Inter Faith Network. Through events, workshops, and active representation on community committees—such as the county emergency response team and the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE)—the Council champions its vision of unity, understanding, and respect across all religious boundaries.
